Review:

I love the Focus. It just does things right. The early issues have a bit of that background problem, but the B/W style keeps this watered down. Eventually spook grasps his backgrounds with a lovely eye for detail that helps bring a powerful sense of space and scene. He makes living scene. The relationship between character and place and each other a strength. It helps build them and the world and allows for the audience to care. The character design simple, but very expressive, aided by that background work. The uniqueness of the world also helps reinforce its captivating components. There is a heavy metal esque atmosphere like Blanche, Miller, or Shultz. Even if the story is an obvious slow burn, there is always something happening on the page. His ability to show over tell is an important strength of the comic. The living scenes and expression keeps things engaging as a good comic should be. My only complaint is really no page numbers. Though, one can argue I am nicer on comics instead of the written word.
